We believe that learning doesn’t just happen in the classroom, it happens when young people are given the chance to step into real working environments, meet inspiring people, and see first-hand how their skills can make a difference.
This year, we’ve opened our doors to a diverse group of learners; high school students trying their first week in a workplace, college students completing essential course placements, and university students undertaking work-based learning as part of their degree. Each one has brought fresh energy, curiosity, and a willingness to get stuck in.
Their journey began with a warm welcome and a structured induction, ensuring they understood safeguarding, confidentiality, GDPR, and health and safety. From there, they followed a personalised timetable that reflected their interests and gave them the chance to experience the full breadth of SSP. They shadowed colleagues in both operational and central teams, attended meetings, supported customer engagement activities, and learned how every role plays a part in preventing homelessness and supporting independence.
Student Voices
“I didn’t realise how many different jobs were involved in helping people find and keep their homes. Everyone here made me feel part of the team.” High school work experience student
“The variety was brilliant, I got to see how a charity works from every angle, and it’s made me want to work in the sector.” University work-based learning student
One high school student left with a newfound awareness of the breadth of careers in housing and support, while a university placement student reflected on how their experience shaped their career ambitions.
Our colleagues also loved the experience, praising the enthusiasm, thoughtful questions, and new perspectives the students brought.
Colleague Reflections
“It was inspiring to see the enthusiasm and fresh perspectives the students brought. They reminded us why we do what we do.” SSP Colleague
“They asked brilliant questions, got involved wherever they could, and left with a real understanding of the difference we make.” SSP Colleague
By welcoming learners from different educational stages, we’re not only helping them develop skills, confidence, and career aspirations, we’re also strengthening community connections and inspiring the housing and charity leaders of tomorrow.
