Collaboration with Spotland Community Association

SSP is working in partnership with Spotland Community Association, a long-established Rochdale charity supporting disadvantaged communities. Through this collaboration, residents can access practical advice and early intervention support around housing issues such as eviction notices, repairs and sourcing accommodation, as well as welfare rights, benefits advice, education, training, social inclusion and volunteering opportunities.
Dawn, a 49-year-old mum of four, first connected with SSP through the Spotland Community Centre drop-in sessions after facing a Section 21 notice due to severe damp and mould in her privately rented home. The situation had begun affecting her family’s health and caused significant anxiety. Already attending Spotland’s ladies’ group, she was signposted to SSP for support with both her housing crisis and a college placement required for her Health & Social Care course. “It was helpful and lifesaving,” Dawn shared. “I wouldn’t be here today or smiling today without SSP’s support.”
With SSP’s guidance, Dawn was supported to liaise with the council, secure a new tenancy just days before Christmas, and access practical assistance including deposit support, moving costs, flooring, and essential furniture such as beds, wardrobes and a dining table. “The house couldn’t be a home without SSP,” she said. “They have done everything to make sure me and my family are happy today.” SSP staff were on hand throughout the move, even during the holiday period, helping to ease what would otherwise have been an overwhelming transition.
Beyond housing support, the partnership has enabled Dawn to continue progressing with her Level 2 Health & Social Care qualification at Hopwood Hall College. She is now volunteering with SSP as part of her course placement, supporting other families to furnish their homes and settle comfortably. Looking ahead, she hopes to complete her studies, go to university and become a nurse. Reflecting on her journey, she said: “SSP care, love and support you. They removed all the anxiety and made me feel like family.”
Monthly drop-in sessions continue at Spotland Community Centre, where experienced supported housing workers provide timely advice and practical assistance, strengthening prevention, reducing homelessness and improving long-term outcomes for individuals and families across Rochdale.
