Stepping Stone Projects is proud to celebrate two colleagues shortlisted at the Housing Heroes Awards 2026, hosted by Inside Housing. Chris McCarthy and Millie Wilson have been recognised for their exceptional impact, professionalism, and commitment to supporting vulnerable people.
Chris McCarthy – Wider Sector Inspirational Leader of the Year (Finalist)
Chris leads the Rochdale Prevention Service, one of the organisation’s most complex services. Over the past year, he has taken a hands-on role in high-risk safeguarding cases, leading multi-agency responses with housing, Adult Care, police, and health partners to ensure safe outcomes.
He is equally committed to developing others, supporting colleagues into leadership roles through structured mentoring and coaching. Under his leadership, the service has been recognised as best practice by Adult Care Commissioners and is influencing the borough’s 2026 commissioned model, demonstrating clear strategic impact.

Millie Wilson – Outstanding Achievement by an Apprentice (Finalist)
Millie’s apprenticeship has been defined by resilience and measurable impact. Most notably, she led a complex case over 12 months to secure a fully funded stairlift for a vulnerable customer, restoring their safety and independence despite previous refusals and multiple delays.
She coordinated across Adult Social Care, Occupational Therapists, and contractors, escalating risks and overcoming barriers. When post-installation issues arose, she continued to advocate, ensuring the customer received ongoing support.
Beyond this, Millie manages referrals independently, maintains strong partnerships, and upholds high safeguarding standards. Her contribution has been recognised internally and externally, including a Rising Star award and an Apprentice of the Year nomination.
