SSP achieves double success at National Housing Heroes Awards 2026

Stepping Stone Projects is proud to announce outstanding success at the National Housing Heroes Awards 2026, recognising excellence across the housing sector.

With more than 2,000 housing organisations and approximately 250,000 employees represented nationally, competition was exceptionally strong. SSP entered two categories, was shortlisted in both, and is delighted to have won both awards.

Millie Wilson – Apprentice of the Year
Chris McCarthy – Leader of the Year (Wider Sector)

SSP was the only organisation nationally to secure two category wins on the night.

Millie Wilson – Apprentice of the Year

Millie Wilson was recognised for exceptional performance throughout her apprenticeship, demonstrating professionalism, resilience, and a strong commitment to safeguarding and customer wellbeing.

A key example of Millie’s impact is her management of a complex, long-term case involving a vulnerable customer with significant mobility needs. Through sustained advocacy and coordination with Adult Social Care, Occupational Therapists, contractors, and partner agencies, Millie ensured the successful installation of a funded stairlift, preventing significant risk and restoring independence for the customer.

She continued to support the case following installation, escalating safety and financial concerns and securing ongoing Floating Support. Millie is widely regarded by colleagues as reliable, professional, and highly capable, with her tutor also recognising her outstanding contribution to the housing sector.

Chris McCarthy – Leader of the Year (Wider Sector)

Chris McCarthy, nominated for Inspirational Leader of the Year, is a highly respected leader within Stepping Stone Projects and leads the Rochdale Prevention Service, a complex and high-impact service.

Over the past 12 months, Chris has demonstrated consistent, inclusive and hands-on leadership, fostering a supportive and high-performing team culture. His approach ensures colleagues at all levels feel valued, supported and empowered.

Under his leadership, the Rochdale Prevention Service continues to deliver strong outcomes across housing advice, floating support, crisis accommodation, and out-of-hours services, and has been recognised by Adult Care Commissioners as an example of best practice in safeguarding and integrated working.

Chris also makes a significant contribution beyond service delivery, supporting apprentices, workforce development, and community initiatives, and is widely respected for his professionalism, integrity, and commitment to social value.
